Happiness
All of us have a birth right, a birth right to be happy. Instead we make such a mess of our lives that we turn out to be unhappy. When we look at a child, a child is gurgling away with happiness because the child’s needs are simple. Whenever the child’s needs are met, the child is happy.
Likewise, when you are growing-up as a young student, your needs are extremely simple and with those simple needs whatever you are given, you accept with a profound joy and that leads to a lot of delight. As you keep growing-up, you start comparing what you have got with what someone else has got. And this is the beginning of becoming unhappy in life. When you start comparing, there are times when what you have got is probably not, according to you, as good as what somebody else has. And that starts making you unhappy.
So, instead of enjoying what you have got and being happy with what you have, you start becoming unhappy with what you have.
There is an old story, called the “Story of 99”, in which apparently, a king gives a very happy servant 99 gold coins. However, the servant becomes unhappy that he did not get 100 gold coins. Rather than being happy with the 99 coins he had, he was unhappy that he could not get that one coin more.
Therefore, when you start comparing with rest of the world for what you have, you are setting yourself up for becoming unhappy in life.
Here are 3 simple things to do to become happy.
- Thank people who have helped you-
When you wake up in the morning, mentally thank people who have crossed your path and helped you. It could be a colleague, a friend, a rickshaw driver; it could be whoever, but, be thankful to the people who had helped you yesterday.
And there are some people who may have not helped you and may even have been rude to you. Be thankful to them as well, because somehow, you learnt to do things by yourself.
- Mentally go through your day and figure out who all are going to connect with you today. Whoever the person may be, just think of one good quality about that person and say “Wow! You know I’m looking forward to meet this person because I will be able to learn something more about that particular good quality.”
For instance, if there is someone who has got a marvelous smile, then you can say “I’m looking forward to meet this person because this person is always smiling and I feel good about it.” If there is someone who is a good analytical person, then you could say “I’m going to meet this person who’s going to teach me a thing or two on how to analyze things in life.
- During the day you will use many of your belongings – your phone, laptop, shoes, clothes; Feel and be grateful, that you have them. There are so many people who don’t even have that. Therefore start being happy with what you have got today and what you have with you.
You need to be happy at the end of the day. So sit back, and think, for a minute that how blessed you are because somewhere, somebody, has been able to give you abundance of opportunities in life and there are people who don’t even have that in life.
There is no limit to what we want in life, but there is certainly a way in limiting our happiness to enjoy what we have got today.
So to be genuinely happy, start enjoying what you have. Don’t worry, about not having what you want. Instead start enjoying and wanting what you have.
